Whether you are interested in day sailing or have visions of chartering a sailboat in exotic locations like the Caribbean or the Med, our sailing lessons are specifically designed to prepare you to safely skipper a cruising sailboat in a variety of conditions and locales with total confidence.
Since our class sizes are limited to a maximum of 2 students, you are assured of receiving a level of attention and personalization that you cannot achieve otherwise. With our lessons you have the instructor’s undivided attention and the “hands on” time is all yours; not divided among several students. At Outbound Sailing our objective is to provide you with the best sailing instruction available, and we are absolutely confident that you will be delighted with the results.
Our highly rated, friendly, and professional instructors all have 20+ years of sailing/cruising experience. Each has all of the appropriate ASA Instructor Certifications and are USCG licensed Captains. In addition to personalized attention, you will receive tools, tips, and handouts that will truly enhance your learning experience, plus we provide you with tools to help you retain what you’ve learned. It’s important to practice what you learned, so we provide you with access to our sailboats at a special student rental rate.
Whether your plans include bareboat chartering, club membership, buying a boat, crewing on a friend’s boat, or simply day sailing, your Instructor will focus on those aspects of the course that will best help you achieve your sailing objectives.

Learn to skipper a 20' - 27' sloop-rigged keelboat by day, in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards.
Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered 25'-35' keelboat by day in moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather, safety and seamanship.
Learn how to sail a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered 30'-45' sailboat during a multi-day cruise upon inland/coastal waters in moderate/heavy winds and sea conditions. Learn about provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring / mooring, docking, emergency operations, weather, and more.
Learn the the navigational theory and practices for safe navigation of a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters. On-water coastal navigation skills elements are contained in the ASA103, Basic Coastal Cruising, ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising, and ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising, in progressively increasing levels of detail.
Learn to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length in coastal and inland waters, in any conditions.
Desire to improve or re-familiarize sailing knowledge and skills imparted during previous ASA keelboat certification course(s). Student and Instructor jointly decide on goals prior to the start of the review. Student receives a written, personalized Recommended Plan suggesting steps for continued improvement in knowledge and skills proficiencies after the review is completed. This review may be taken multiple times.
Learn basic docking skills for boats with single inboard or outboard engines. Discover the basic theory and hands-on techniques needed to dock and undock boats in an efficient manner and without damage or injury.
