Outbound Sailing is a certified ASA Sailing School in Austin offering a full range of sailing lessons from Basic Keelboat Sailing to Advanced Cruising & Seamanship

Whether you are interested in day sailing or have visions of chartering a sailboat in exotic locations like the Caribbean or the Med, our sailing lessons are specifically designed to prepare you to safely skipper a cruising sailboat in a variety of conditions and locales with total confidence.

Since our class sizes are limited to a maximum of 3 students, you are assured of receiving a level of attention and personalization that you cannot achieve otherwise. With our lessons, you have the instructor’s undivided attention and each student is “hands-on” at all times when we are underway. No sitting around watching! At Outbound Sailing our objective is to provide you with the best sailing instruction available, and we are absolutely confident that you will be delighted with the results.

Our highly rated, friendly, and professional ASA instructors all have extensive sailing and cruising experience, including offshore sailing on our Caribbean Adventure Learning trips. In addition to personalized attention, you will receive tools, tips, and handouts that will truly enhance your learning experience. It’s important to maintain your skills, so we provide you with access to our sailboats at special student rates. Our Outbound Sailing Community program is designed to give our students plenty of opportunity to practice their skills and learn more by interacting with other sailors. You can go sailing with an instructor and 4 other students for 3 hours. We charge $25 per person. So you can see we are serious about helping you get time on the water.

Whether your plans include bareboat chartering, club membership, buying a boat, crewing on a friend’s boat, or simply day sailing, your Instructor will focus on those aspects of the course that will best help you achieve your sailing objectives.

Learn to skipper a 20' - 27' sloop-rigged keelboat by day, in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards.

Learn to skipper and crew aboard a sloop-rigged keelboat of approximately 20 to 30 feet in length by day in winds up to 20 knots. Depart, sail, and return with control demonstrating teamwork.

Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered 25'-35' keelboat by day in moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather, safety and seamanship.

Learn how to sail a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered 30'-45' sailboat during a multi-day cruise upon inland/coastal waters in moderate/heavy winds and sea conditions. Learn about provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring / mooring, docking, emergency operations, weather, and more.

Learn to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length in coastal and inland waters, in any conditions.

Learn to skipper an auxiliary-powered sailing cruising catamaran of approximately 30-45' feet in length during a multi-day liveaboard cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions.

ASA 118, Docking Endorsement
The successful sailor will have the knowledge and skills to safely and competently dock and maneuver a sailboat under auxiliary power in a variety of conditions. Includes knowledge of steering and propulsion theory, wind and current, single and double-rudder monohulls, catamarans, safety precautions, knots and line handling, fixed and floating docks.
