Having earned national recognition as “ASA Outstanding School” 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 (every year that this award was offered since we opened our doors in 2008) and “ASA Outstanding Instructor” 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 (x2), we feel that it is safe to say that we are “New England’s Foremost Sailing School!”
At Black Rock Sailing School, we focus on quality – not quantity! Our small team of talented instructors provide courses that specialize in daysailing, coastal cruising, bareboat charter certification, women’s-only courses, docking, navigation, performance cruising, and “adventure cruising” experiences along the New England coastline and beyond.
Our multi-media classroom and sailing school fleet are conveniently located in the picturesque Brewer Yacht Yard, Cowesett – only seven minutes off of I-95, thirty minutes from the Connecticut border, and fifteen minutes south of downtown Providence.
Our marina provides instant access to the protected waters of Greenwich Bay – just a short sail out into the larger waters of the renowned Narragansett Bay.
We offer ASA 101 and 103 courses EVERY Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, Saturday, Sunday out of our Rhode Island and Massachusetts locations May – October. More advanced certification courses are available throughout the year in both New England and in the Virgin Islands (see our schedule).
While our competition teaches aboard 30 year old boats that were never intended to be teaching vessels, we teach ASA 101 aboard a mint condition 2011 Colgate 26. This award winning, purpose built training boat has been chosen by the US Naval Academy, US Coast Guard Academy, Maine Maritime Academy, and a few of the best sailing schools in the country, for their training needs.
The Colgate 26 is quick & agile, impossible to capsize, and packed with safety and comfort features that make this design the ultimate boat for novices to learn on!
Our ASA 101 Basic Keelboat curriculum has been fine-tuned by our staff for over twenty years, and provides our students with at least 24 hours of instruction over three consecutive days. We guarantee that you will learn how to sail!
Unlike our competition, our ASA 101 graduates enjoy a FREE 30 day membership in our sailing club to practice their new skills aboard our boats – with the option to join as an annual member at a 20% graduate discount!
We teach ASA 103 & 104 aboard a beautifully equipped, Hunter 356 up here in New England and our partnership with CYOA Yacht Charters down in the Virgin Islands provides us access to their amazing fleet of 41 – 50 foot monohulls and catamarans during the winter months.
In Warwick, our small sailing club is designed to provide our customers with inexpensive boat access aboard boats that you will be proud to sail. You can enjoy day sailors and moderate sized cruising yachts capable of extended trips along the coast – at a fraction of the cost of ownership. Higher levels of membership provide access to all smaller boats as well!
If you are serious about learning how to sail, or are looking to join a high quality sailing club in Narragansett Bay, we are confident that Black Rock Sailing School should be your choice!
Since 1991, Black Rock’s founder has been mentored by leaders in the sailing school industry, and since 1995, he has managed or owned award winning sailing schools in New England and in the Caribbean year-round. This experience and knowledge is passed along to members of this already talented staff each year.
We have never lost our focus, and will always be a sailing school first! We are not a yacht brokerage firm and/or charter company disguised as a sailing school trying to ultimately sell more boats.

'I have wanted to sail for a very long time. After my husband took the ASA 105 course with Brenton, he came home and immediately said, 'Honey, I have found your teacher!' I just learned more in one day than I have after five years (of sailing)!'
M.R. of Boston, MA - ASA 101, Keelboat Sailing 1

Having been an instructor in the past, I like to know when I see a real pro. Brenton is on a whole other level. He possesses that rare talent of knowing what works when it comes to instruction - whether to a 7 yr old or a 70 yr old.
J. C. of Manchester By The Sea, MA - ASA 103, Coastal Cruising

Your knowledge and experience are astounding, and the way you’re able to bring it to our level made us both feel confident and secure in the process. We could not have imagined a better instructor or nicer person to spend a week with!
