WELCOME ABOARD. Whether you are looking to begin sailing as a weekend activity on a local freshwater lake, or you are dreaming of chartering and cruising on blue water, our staff of certified ASA instructors can help you get started on the proper tack. For those aspiring to move on to open-water sailing, you can jump start your path toward mastering ASA’s Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering courses by earning your ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing certification close to home before heading off to the coast or islands. If your current plans call for hoisting your sails on nearby lakes, we can tailor your course to meet your specific needs and goals. We can also gear your course for a couple, a family, a group, or a completely one-on-one experience. But no matter what, we keep our class sizes small so that there are never more than four students per instructor.
We ensure you get the personal attention and time on the tiller to confidently build your skills. To make our weekday and weekend courses informative and comfortable, we teach them on 25-foot keelboats. If you already have significant sailing experience, you can skip the course and challenge the on-the-water and written test. We also offer 3-hour or customized sailing cruises for up to four guests to provide you the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of sailing in a truly relaxed environment. We are located on Lake Monroe—the state’s largest inland lake, which offers one of the Midwest’s best sailing experiences. Pristine shorelines with tree- covered hills surround the 11,000-acre lake. This protected sanctuary is part of state and federally owned lands that provide a refuge for deer, beavers, wild turkeys, ospreys and bald eagles, which are often seen on our excursions.
Our association has been offering sailing lessons on Lake Monroe since 1977, and our sailing club remains one of the largest and most active sailing hubs in the state, offering 100 wet slips and 57 buoys. The facilities include shelter houses overlooking the lake, a toilet and shower house, camping areas, and a children’s playground. One of our most popular social events is our annual fish fry, and our racing program includes opportunities for sailors of all levels. You can find more information on Lake Monroe at www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2954.htm.
Lake Monroe, located just south of Bloomington in the rolling, wooded hills of Southern Indiana, is one hour south of Indianapolis, IN, two hours west of Cincinnati, OH, and two hours north of Louisville, KY. When planning a visit don’t overlook spending time in Bloomington, which offers sophistication and Mid-Western charm.
