At the Coconut Grove Sailing School helping people become exceptional sailors is our passion. We are located in Dinner Key marina in the heart of the historic village of Coconut Grove, Miami FL. Coconut Grove is one of the most charming villages inFlorida and an important tourists destination for people around the world. It was founded in 1863 and it has since then been a hub for sailors. This rich history can be seen through the village. Coconut Grove is a lively community with many great restaurants to visit after your sailing lesson. Our Sailing Lessons take place in the pristine turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay. A world renown sailing destination and home to a number of sailing competitions such as “ The Bacardi cup invitational”and “ Miami sailing Week”.
We specialize in one-on-one and private lessons for up to 4 family members or friends at a time.
We offer several private ASA sailing classes in 3 different types of class settings:
Express sailing lessons. This class is for those who have sailing experience and who have mainly learned by trial and error or from friends and family but haven’t received any official training or certification yet. To qualify for this class a brief evaluation of their sailing skills is performed prior to registration.
In-depth private sailing lessons. This class is for up to 4 students or 1 student with3 guest at a time. In this class we will spend 3 days on each lesson (ASA 101,103 and 104) and each student will get ample time at the helm to practice their newly acquired sailing skills.
Sail cation. This is our most popular live aboard class consisting of ASA 101, 103and 104 Bareboat Captain.It is designed for up to 4 people at a time. In this course participants will spend 6days and nights living aboard in a 3 cabin, 2 head 40’ Beneteau sailboat.Each night we will return to the marina to spend the night comfortably at the dock with the AC on and all that.
Coconut Grove has to offer just a short walk away. With the exception of one night at anchor as required in the 104 lesson plan. Each day class will take place on the boat, if all guests are students we will be working together on the lessons. Any guest that isn’t a student but staying aboard with the crew is welcome to sail with us or take the day to explore all that Miami has to offer on land.
Learn to skipper a 20' - 27' sloop-rigged keelboat by day, in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards.
Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered 25'-35' keelboat by day in moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather, safety and seamanship.
Learn how to sail a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered 30'-45' sailboat during a multi-day cruise upon inland/coastal waters in moderate/heavy winds and sea conditions. Learn about provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation, anchoring / mooring, docking, emergency operations, weather, and more.
