Spinnaker Sailing is proud to enter its 45th year as one of the premier sailing schools in the world.
Unmatched Instructor-to-Student Ratios
We set the industry standard by offering the lowest student-to-instructor ratios in the USA. Our Basic Keelboat course features just 2 students per instructor, while our Basic Coastal Cruising course accommodates 3 students per instructor.
The Youngest Instructional Fleet on the West Coast
While many sailing schools rely on boats over 50 years old, our fleet is cutting-edge, with most vessels less than five years old. Our Andrews 21s, for example, boast spacious cockpits and versatile sail plans, making them ideal for San Francisco Bay’s varying conditions—from light morning breezes to brisk afternoon winds. For more advanced sailors, our J/80 fleet is perfect for the Bay’s 20+ knot winds. These boats are agile, fast, and capable of planing at speeds exceeding 10 knots on windy days.
A Unique Approach to Bareboat Chartering
Our ASA 104 Intermediate Coastal Cruising class spans four full days, combining hands-on learning with an itinerary-driven approach. Students train on the fast and versatile J/105, the ideal boat for tackling the Bay’s challenging waters.
A Prime Location
Located at South Beach Harbor—one of the best marinas on the West Coast—Spinnaker Sailing offers unparalleled access to prime sailing conditions. Just three minutes from the dock, students can experience steady 15-25 knot winds and flat water, perfect for honing their skills. Beyond the water, South Beach’s downtown San Francisco location offers convenient parking, easy access to the vibrant SOMA neighborhood, and countless options for dining, parks, and entertainment to round out your day.
Expert Instructors
Our instructors are US Coast Guard Masters with decades of experience in teaching, racing, and professional sailing. Many actively compete on the West Coast racing circuit. With a comprehensive curriculum and a friendly, approachable teaching style, we ensure learning to sail is as enjoyable as sailing itself.
Preparing Ambassadors of Sailing
At Spinnaker Sailing, we don’t just teach sailing—we teach students how to share their passion. Our graduates leave with the confidence and skills to safely navigate San Francisco Bay and introduce family and friends to the joys of sailing.
A Smarter Way to Own a Boat
Our innovative Timeshare Sailing Program offers a hassle-free alternative to traditional boat ownership. For a flat monthly rate starting at just $599, members enjoy up to 7 uses per month on impeccably maintained boats shared by no more than seven users. Simply show up, sail, and let us handle the maintenance, cleaning, and servicing.

Compared to other places, the sailboat was great. It was an excellent size and very receptive. The communication from the office was great as far as booking, reminders and any questions you had. Totally worth it and I would recommend it.

I have had 4 instructors thus far, all were great, Garret and Steve were awesome and stood out to me. They were both super technical and really helped me feel comfortable on my own. Been bareboat chartering since I finished classes!
