ASA Med Sailing - Tuscany Flotilla

Scarlino, Portoferraio, Island of Capraia and more...
Tuscany... The name invokes thoughts of centuries old history, Etruscan and Roman cultures, the Italian Renaissance and, of course La Dolce Vita with agreeable climate and rich gastronomy.

Few American sailors know, however, that its coastal waters offer great sailing opportunities.

We have exciting experiences in store for you in Tuscany. Sail its azure waters with us to the islands of Elba and Capraia and discover the typical ports of Porto Azzurro, Portoferraio, Marciana Marina and Capraia. Walk in the footsteps of Napoleon Bonaparte who was banished here for a short time before finally being defeated in Waterloo. Discover the rich Tuscan gastronomy and take this opportunity to spend some time, before or after the cruise, to explore more of this unique region.
Book early as this will fill up fast!

We recommend that you arrive on Thursday, July 14, to get a bit over the jetlag. We may have an excellent dinner planned at Il Veliero, a fabulous restaurant. It is a great way to get to know our fellow sailors over delicious food and wine. Prosecco aperitif courtesy of “The Admiral”.
Join us on a tour of the British Virgin Islands...
...not as a tourist, but as an exclusive guest onboard a mega yacht!
This winter, Arabella visits the British Virgin Islands. The BVI's are on the bucket list of every sailor and you have the opportunity to tour them on a mega-sailing yacht.

  • Arabella Testimonial Marge

“Steering a 157 foot schooner under full canvas in 20-25 plus winds was exciting, with the wind tearing at my hair. With beautiful blue skies and turquoise seas in 80 degrees, what could be better?”

    Marge Benning, Denver CO

  • Arabella Testimonial Tracy Kosbau

“Everything is taken care of. You don’t have to worry about anything. You just sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery, fresh sea air and fantastic ports of call to explore. In a very short time, we all got to know each other and everyone felt like family to me. I learned a lot, and enjoyed sharing this brief moment in time and space on this lovely boat called the Arabella.”

    Tracy Kosbau

  • Arabella Testimonial Tim Shuman

“What do a film producer, a tech consultant, a dad and his son have in common with a group of Puritans? They all boarded a boat named Arabella bound for Massachusetts, albeit 385 years apart. Unlike John Winthrop and crew the modern passengers sailed in comfort on an ASA sponsored voyage to Martha’s Vinyard, Nantucket and Cuttyhunk islands!”

    Tim Shuman

  • Arabella Testimonial Fred Wyckoff and Gerri Haan

“Absolutely no better way to relax… A full day of sailing aboard the “melts my heart” Arabella, lobster for dinner and slow trip back to the schooner during golden hour. Fantastic!”

    Fred Wyckoff and Gerri Haan

Everyone deserves this type of mega yacht sailing experience at some point in their lives, but few can afford it until now. ASA is giving you an opportunity to join us on this unique, and unforgettable, sailing vacation.

ASA Med Sailing – Tuscany Flotilla

The planned itineraries for the trips are essentially the same. Remember, all stops are subject to the captain’s discretion and may vary due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Day 1 (Arrival Day): Saturday

Meet at The Hotel La Darsena in Scarlino

Meeting in the late morning at the Hotel La Darsena in Scarlino. We will have lunch at the marina and then, under “Admiral” Mila’s guidance, go for our provisioning.

Check-in on the yachts in the afternoon and estimated departure time of 17:00 hours. We sail to the beautiful port of Porto Azzurro, where we will spend the night and go for dinner at our favorite restaurant on the waterfront. For dessert, we can walk over to Sub Zero for a decadent gelato. You will not regret these extra calories.

Day 2: Sunday

Sail to Portoferraio

We are in Italy with its “Dolce Far Niente” philosophy and, therefore, we will leave leisurely for a nice sail to Portoferraio, with a stop along the way for some swimming and lunch on board. Look out for the ferry ship painted in Batman theme.

You will have the opportunity to visit this charming town and see how Napoleon lived in exile here. Legend has it that some of his soldiers are still waiting for his return...

Dinner in one of the many excellent ristorantes or trattorias...

Day 3: Monday

Island of Capraia

We drop the lines in Portoferraio and leave its scenic harbor for a 24NM crossing to the national park island of Capraia, where we will overnight in its beautiful little fishing port.

Shake off your sea legs and walk up to the old fortress that dominates the harbor. You will have earned your dinner and bottle of wine at one of the local
restaurants.

Day 4: Tuesday

Cala del Moreto

After a restful night, we will sail along the coast of Capraia and anchor for a swim at its southernmost point in the Cala del Moreto. There are some very interesting geological phenomena here and you can even see French Corsica in the distance. We then cross back to Elba and sail to Marciana Marina, a lovely small port, west of Portoferraio, where we will stay an extra day.

Dinner at one of the local restaurants.

Day 5: Wednesday

Village of Marciana

Taxis or small vans will bring us to the medieval village of Marciana in the mountains above the port. After a refreshment, off we go for a short walk to the base station of the funky cable car that will bring us on top of Monte Cappanne. Bring a sweater of a fleece to keep you warm. At 1,019 m (3,343 ft), it can get a bit chilly here, especially if the clouds move in, but it is definitely worth the ride.

Day 6: Thursday

Marina to Punta Ala

Time to head back to the mainland. We cross from Marciana Marina to Punta Ala at the entrance of the Bay of Follonica, about 25NM.

Dinner on shore.

Day 7: Friday

Scarlino

I know, it is sad, but Friday has arrived, and we have to return to our base in nearby Scarlino. Let’s make the best of it and let’s sail as much as we can in the Bay of Follonica before returning to the docks. If there is no wind, we can always enjoy some last swimming from the boats or at a nearby beach.
